It’s over and done with. There is absolutely no reason for us to go over what happened in Daytona Beach, FL last weekend and there really isn’t any point in doing so. Only two things came to mind as I watched this game unfold: unforced turnovers by the offense in the red zone and BCC’s incredible team speed. That’s about all you need to know if you didn’t see it or couldn’t bear to watch much of it after halftime. If anything was a surprise to me it was the fact that B-CC coach Alvin Wyatt did not try to hit a hundred entering the fourth quarter after putting up 70 points by the end of the third. Everyone knows Wyatt’s disdain for A&T and the fact he’s been carrying a huge grudge against the Aggies since A&T blasted BCC during the legendary Cy McClairen’s final year of coaching in 1994 in a 72-7 homecoming rout in Greensboro. What may have finally dawned on Wyatt last week when he looked up at the score broad was that his long sought after revenge for the perceived injustice inflicted by A&T some 12 years ago was no different in terms of the circumstances versus now, even though this year he was on the top end of the score. That 72-7 beating had little to do with Lee Fobbs or the current A&T team but maybe now Wyatt finally has it out of his system for good. The simple truth of the matter is that neither that 1994 B-CC team nor this 2006 A&T squad was very good and both had more holes than a swiss cheese sandwich. It took Bethune took three straight years of building its recruiting base and adding increased funding to its program to get itself off the floor. Long term, A&T will have to follow a similar route to get itself out of its current doormat status. What’s done is done, so let’s move on. Hampton back in the MEAC driver’s seat We previously discussed the fact that Buddy Pough at SCSU had his team’s destiny in his own hands after his Bulldogs knocked off the Hampton Pirates two weeks ago and that if the Bulldogs were ever going to break the Hampton stranglehold on the MEAC title, this would have to be the year. They still have a road contest at FAMU, but let’s be realistic here for a second. The Pirates are headed to the I-AA postseason and most likely a first round match-up against top-ranked Appalachian State in Boone. The Apps are the defending national champions and primed for another run after crushing Furman last weekend, 49-7. Can you say one and done? Snakes on a football field FAMU comes to town tomorrow for an unusual 4 PM. kickoff at Aggie Stadium. I do like the mid- afternoon start time but it may have been better suited for a September or early October home date instead of November. It will be cold and breezy tomorrow afternoon so I would advise anyone going to put on your long johns and heavy jacket, and buy a lot of hot chocolate. The Rattlers are under second year coach Rubin Carter and got a last second 24-23 homecoming win against Morgan State last weekend in Tallahassee. FAMU still runs “the throw first and ask questions later” offense and have won its share of close games this year while also dropping some not so close ones. The Aggies are just looking to not shoot themselves in the foot with offensive turnovers when in scoring position and to just be in the game by the start of fourth quarter. The weather might become a factor for the warm-blooded Floridians if the Aggies can find a way to contain wide receiver Raymond Chester and generate some kind of pass rush. That's a big if. Offensively, the running game was better against BCC and the play calls have been there. but the execution has not and the Aggies still consistently turn the ball over in the red zone, a sure recipe for FAMU and A&T have staged some real battles over the last ten years when both these teams were on a yearly collision course to determine the MEAC title. It became an extremely intense rivalry during the days of Billy Joe and Bill Hayes. One day this match-up just might get back to that mystique and marquee billing again. But it won’t be this Saturday. Prediction:
